Mein erstes Projekt unterst\u00fctzt den Bau der Tokumma-Schule inklusive die Ausr\u00fcstung von M\u00f6beln, Computern sowie Solarpanels f\u00fcr Strom, um Licht zur Unterrichtsvorbereitung und Zugang zu News per Radio zu erm\u00f6glichen. Der eigene Blog<\/a> (Kopien unten) daf\u00fcr h\u00e4lt die aktuelle Entwicklung dabei im Bilde. Ich plane sp\u00e4testens im Februar 2014 nach \u00c4thiopien zu reisen, um die einzelnen Projekte zu besichtigen und zu dokumentieren.<\/p>\n

Solar Powered at Tokumma School!<\/span><\/h3>\n

At one of our schools, Ambo Tokumma Elementary in western Ethiopia\u00a0(see picture above)<\/em>, the installation of solar panels has seen many amazing changes to life and work at the school. The project has allowed solar energy to be harnessed to power lighting and radios across the school! It also lays the foundations for our ongoing work at the school where we are currently building an IT centre complete with solar powered netbooks and an internet connection \u2013 a first for the area!<\/p>\n

Tokumma Elementary School is located in West Shoa zone of Oromia Regional\u00a0State in Ethiopia. The school\u2019s catchment area is about 35 km2 with a population\u00a0of about 3,000. The source of income in the area is largely traditional farming and\u00a0animal rearing. The area does not have proper modern infrastructure including\u00a0road, electricity, potable water and health facility.<\/p>\n

However, last year, the Tokumma school enjoyed the benefits of a joint British & Foreign School Society (BFSS<\/a>) project which helped expand the school to\u00a0accommodate over 150 extra pupils in three new classrooms. It also constructed a new library \u2013 a hugely important source of information and education for the children and local community \u2013 which can serve up to 40 pupils at a time!<\/p>\n

As well as this brilliant expansion in the school\u2019s capacity, this\u00a0BFSS<\/a>-funded project, coordinated with Link Ethiopia, also funded the installation of a solar-powered electricity system, which provides clean, sustainable energy to classrooms. This has allowed the school \u2013 in a village with no electricity connection \u2013 to provide lighting to classrooms and to power radios!<\/p>\n

Building on previous work, Link Ethiopia\u2019s new project at the school, once again in cooperation with the\u00a0BFSS<\/a>\u00a0and with generous help from our Swiss donor\u00a0Christian Sailer<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Gymnasium Kirchenfeld<\/a>, will create a solar-powered IT centre at the school, and one which will be connected to the internet! This will be a huge improvement in the educational opportunities that Tokumma school can provide to their pupils, and will be getting under way in the next few weeks! We look forward to seeing how this new project progresses, and hope we can match the success of our previous work at the school.<\/p>\n

School Link Programm<\/h3>\n

Mit dem\u00a0School Linking Programm<\/a>\u00a0wird eine langfristige Zusammenarbeit zwischen Schulen aus Europa und Schulen aus \u00c4thiopien erm\u00f6glicht. Das Programm l\u00e4uft momentan ausschliesslich in Grossbritannien, aber Gespr\u00e4che f\u00fcr eine Schweizer Erweiterung sind gemacht und eine erste Schule der Stadt Bern wird sich f\u00fcr dieses Programm einsetzen. Nebst einem digitalen Austausch per Blog, E-Mail und SocialMedia zwischen den Sch\u00fclerinnen und Sch\u00fcler beider Schulen, soll ein pers\u00f6nlicher Besuch f\u00fcr 2- 3 Wochen bei der lokalen Schule in \u00c4thiopien stattfinden.<\/p>\n
