CS@Ethiopia – Solar Powered Education

Mein erstes Projekt unterstützt den Bau der Tokumma-Schule inklusive die Ausrüstung von Möbeln, Computern sowie Solarpanels für Strom, um Licht zur Unterrichtsvorbereitung und Zugang zu News per Radio zu ermöglichen. Der eigene Blog (Kopien unten) dafür hält die aktuelle Entwicklung dabei im Bilde. Ich plane spätestens im Februar 2014 nach Äthiopien zu reisen, um die einzelnen Projekte zu besichtigen und zu dokumentieren.

Solar Powered at Tokumma School!

At one of our schools, Ambo Tokumma Elementary in western Ethiopia (see picture above), the installation of solar panels has seen many amazing changes to life and work at the school. The project has allowed solar energy to be harnessed to power lighting and radios across the school! It also lays the foundations for our ongoing work at the school where we are currently building an IT centre complete with solar powered netbooks and an internet connection – a first for the area!

Tokumma Elementary School is located in West Shoa zone of Oromia Regional State in Ethiopia. The school’s catchment area is about 35 km2 with a population of about 3,000. The source of income in the area is largely traditional farming and animal rearing. The area does not have proper modern infrastructure including road, electricity, potable water and health facility.

However, last year, the Tokumma school enjoyed the benefits of a joint British & Foreign School Society (BFSS) project which helped expand the school to accommodate over 150 extra pupils in three new classrooms. It also constructed a new library – a hugely important source of information and education for the children and local community – which can serve up to 40 pupils at a time!

As well as this brilliant expansion in the school’s capacity, this BFSS-funded project, coordinated with Link Ethiopia, also funded the installation of a solar-powered electricity system, which provides clean, sustainable energy to classrooms. This has allowed the school – in a village with no electricity connection – to provide lighting to classrooms and to power radios!

Building on previous work, Link Ethiopia’s new project at the school, once again in cooperation with the BFSS and with generous help from our Swiss donor Christian Sailer and the Gymnasium Kirchenfeld, will create a solar-powered IT centre at the school, and one which will be connected to the internet! This will be a huge improvement in the educational opportunities that Tokumma school can provide to their pupils, and will be getting under way in the next few weeks! We look forward to seeing how this new project progresses, and hope we can match the success of our previous work at the school.

School Link Programm

Mit dem School Linking Programm wird eine langfristige Zusammenarbeit zwischen Schulen aus Europa und Schulen aus Äthiopien ermöglicht. Das Programm läuft momentan ausschliesslich in Grossbritannien, aber Gespräche für eine Schweizer Erweiterung sind gemacht und eine erste Schule der Stadt Bern wird sich für dieses Programm einsetzen. Nebst einem digitalen Austausch per Blog, E-Mail und SocialMedia zwischen den Schülerinnen und Schüler beider Schulen, soll ein persönlicher Besuch für 2- 3 Wochen bei der lokalen Schule in Äthiopien stattfinden.

Sommercamps in Äthiopien?

Mit Link Ethiopia zusammen plane ich eine Art Sommercamp, wo die Schülerinnen und Schüler auf lokale oder regionale Probleme eingehen müssen. Die Fragestellungen sollen per Computer, GPS und Karten-Software gelöst werden.

Ein Beispiel dafür könnte sein, was entscheidende Faktoren sind, um erfolgreiche Kaffeeernten zu generieren. Hier spielen viele räumliche Faktoren eine grosse Rolle.
Diese Art Camp führe ich in der Schweiz mit dem Schweizer Nationalpark und Esri Schweiz schon seit einigen Jahren sehr erfolgreich durch.
